Advertising Planner

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
We are beginning our fifth IB unit of inquiry for the year, How We Organize Ourselves. The central idea of this unit is: through media and technology, advertising influences our choices.  During the next five weeks, your child will inquire about how advertisers influence audiences, the positive and negative effects of advertising, and the responsibilities of advertisers.
With the help of an advertising expert from Young Audiences, students will be the driving force behind the advertising campaign for the school carnival. Each child will create a logo and slogan (one of which will be used as the t-shirt design), write a persuasive radio script for morning or afternoon announcements, and even contribute to a commercial that will encourage the Roberts community to attend the carnival.
During this unit, students will learn about the “tricks of the trade” used by advertisers to persuade their audiences. We will discuss the differences between ads intended for adults and for children. Students will develop two print ads for a single product, each one directed toward a different audience. Each child will create an Advertise-a-Book poster to persuade others to read a book that they have enjoyed. This unit lends itself to discussing and applying the idea of persuasion as author’s purpose. Additionally, your child will learn about the economic concepts of income, taxes, savings, wants, needs, producers, consumers, goods, and services.
Students will further develop their understanding of causation, reflection, and responsibility. They will continue to use their social, communication, and self-management skills as they strive to demonstrate the IB attitudes of creativity, enthusiasm, cooperation, and integrity.
As always, thanks for all of your help and support!
Sincerely,
2nd Grade Teachers

Upcoming Events:
Next Tuesday and Wednesday (April 2-3), we will be eating lunch a little bit early. If you are planning on dropping your child's lunch off and/or eating with them, our lunch time for these two days will be from 11:54 - 12:24 (Table 5). We are switching our lunch times with 4th grade because they will be taking the STARR Writing for those two days.
